Postmodernism

The term “Postmodernism” started being used around 1970 to describe the changes that were taking place in the Western culture from the 60s onwards. Simply put Postmodernism is a reaction against Modernism. Some think it begun with Pop Art, and continued with Conceptual Art, Neo Expressionism, Feminist Art and more.

Postmodernism can be characterized by it's distinction between high culture and mass or popular culture. What it does is it tries to melt, combine art and everyday life. An other thing is that it also refuses the authority of any single style and definition of what art should be.

(I had to.)

"What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca Cola, too. A coke is a coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it." Andy Warhol

Here is a video called Sleeper by Mark Wallinger, winner of the Turner Prize in 2007. It's basically the artist himself dressed in a bear suit wandering around the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin for about 2 hours.

It's postmodernism.
